For my masters I want to explore creating game-ready characters studying the workflows of both AAA and smaller independent companies. I'll look at what works best for me and use that for my projects. We also met with the other students doing that masters and received our programme handbooks and went over them together.
This week was spent mostly setting up and since we wouldn't be starting properly till I decided to do the UE4 Mega Game Jam with James Broderick (http://jmbroderick.blogspot.co.uk/), Dominic Matthuse (dominic.mathuse@googlemail.com), and Amber Jamieson (http://amberjamieson.wixsite.com/gameartblog). The theme was "Settle the Score" and ran from Thursday 6th-Thursday 13th.
We chose to do a game about settling the bill with your friends at the end of the meal, it's often awkward or even irritating and we wanted to capture that in the game.

We decided to do ourselves as characters but I didn't do too much on the concepting side because I didn't have time. I got some pics of us and did some basic analysis of our head shapes. I was going for a simple style and wanted them to look like caricatures of us.
I then modelled the heads looking at the topology on Dmitry Grebenkov's models. The original aim was to paint different expressions for the characters so they got angry if they lost money or extra happy if they gained it, so I modelled face without the facial loops and would texture on the features instead.
It didn't happen in the end because we ran out of time, but it was fun to learn a new way to model heads and actually turned out better than I thought it would.
I downloaded a base mesh for the bodies and then adjusted them to fit our sizes and proportions. I then unwrapped the heads (body was already unwrapped), set them up as a multi-sub and exported them for texturing.

I textured the characters in 3D-coat -which I hadn't used before, so it was great to try out- and I found really easy to use. It was really helpful being able to draw directly onto the model and I'll definitely continue to use it from here on out. Also because the bodies were all the same mesh I could load textures from the first one I'd textured to cut down on time. For instance, I used the jeans and shoes from James' textures (1st character) to do Amber and Dom's (2nd and 4th).
It's quite funny how much these turned out as they look like us quite a bit.
This is a screenshot from the final game, it actually didn't do too bad in the end and it was amazing to see what we managed to get done in just a week.
Later on into the week and continuing onto the next I started putting together moodboards for the components of my project.
